Evidence: Plainly visible and conspicuous material objects or other things presented to the senses that would tend to produce conviction in the mind of an ordinary person as to the existence or non-existence of a fact.
Examine: To visually examine; to look for and identify material physical deficiencies in systems, structures or components of a building through a non-intrusive physical inspection. See inspect.
Exhaust Ventilation: Mechanical removal of air from a portion of a building (e.g., piece of equipment, room, or general area).
Existing: Buildings, facilities or conditions which are already in existence. This Standard is designed to be used to inspect existing commercial properties.
Exit Discharge: The portion of a means of egress between the termination of an exit and a public way.
Expansion Joint: A device used to permit a structure to expand or contract without breakage.
Exposed: Capable of being inadvertently touched by a person because it is not suitably guarded, isolated or insulated.
Exterior Insulation and Finish System: An exterior wall cladding system consisting of an insulation board attached to the wall surface, followed by a base coat and textured finish coat. Also referred to as EIFS and synthetic stucco.
Exterior Property: The open space on the property.
Exterior Wall: An outside wall of a building, either above or below grade.
Extermination: The control or elimination of insects, rats, vermin or other pests.
Face Brick: Bricks designed to be visible based on aesthetics (color and surface).
Fascia: The band running horizontally and positioned vertically under a roof edge, or that which forms the outer surface of a cornice. Serves as a finishing trim between the roof and exterior wall.
Fastener: A bracket or weld that attaches a fixed ladder to a structure.
Fenestration: Products with glass and non-glass glazing materials, including skylights, roof windows, vertical windows, opaque doors, glazed doors and glazed block.
Fire Apparatus Access Road: A road, fire lane, public street, private street, or parking lot lane that provides access from a fire station to a facility.
Fire Code Official: The fire chief or other authority charged with the enforcement of a code.
Fire Department Master Key: A special key carried by fire department officials which will open key boxes on commercial properties.

Fire-Resistance Rating: The time that materials or assemblies can withstand fire exposure.

Fishmouth: A term used to describe a defective seam lap opening that is shaped like a half cylinder.
Fixed Ladder: A ladder that is permanently attached to a building or structure and is used to climb up and down.
Fixed Pane Window: A type of window with a non-operable glass pane that does not open or close.
Flange: The projecting edge on a component.
Flashing: A pre-shaped or molded low-slope roof accessory that is used to terminate the membrane at the roof’s perimeter and at roof penetrations to prevent rainwater/moisture leakage into the structure.
Flat-Plate Structural System: A one-way or two-way cast-in-place concrete roof and floor structural system that uses slabs of uniform thickness.
Flat-Slab Structural System: A one-way cast-in-place concrete roof and floor structural system that uses slabs of uniform thickness, with additional depth at columns.
Flood Coat: A layer of bitumen that serves as the surfacing substrate in a BUR system.
