Automated Lighting Inspection

Automated lighting systems for commercial buildings typically control landscape, building, and parking area lights. These systems may be operated by timers or dusk-to-dawn photosensors. During the preliminary walk-through survey, it is important to determine the type of system present and locate the main controls to ensure a thorough inspection of the exterior lighting system can follow. 

Inspection Steps: 

1. Identify the type of lighting control system and locate the timer box or main photo sensor. 
2. Activate the system by switching the timer to “on” or covering the photo sensor to activate the lights. 
3. Inspect all exterior lights for functionality and note any burned-out bulbs or other issues. 

In some cases, the main controls may be inaccessible, like when they are located in locked closets or different building suites. This should be noted in the inspection report.
