CCPIA News - Certified Commercial Property Inspectors Association

Boulder, Colo. (October 22, 2026) — The Certified Commercial Property Inspectors Association (CCPIA®) recently provided a private training class for construction project engineers and property management teams for Sherwin-Williams. The class was held at Sherwin-Williams University (SWU) Mid-Western Division in Cleveland, Ohio.

Sherwin-Williams owns and manages more than 4,000 buildings throughout North America and the Caribbean, and constructs as many as 80 new buildings each year. Its construction engineers are responsible for both new construction and the ongoing maintenance of the company’s entire property portfolio.

CCPIA® developed the curriculum based on the International Standards of Practice for Inspecting Commercial Buildings (ComSOP) with content customized around Sherwin-Williams’ specific building types and inspection objectives. In addition to classroom instruction, participants completed three mock building inspections including a steel office building, a retail store, and a building finished with an exterior insulation and finish system (EIFS).

The mock inspections surfaced several significant conditions. At one property, a one-year-old packaged HVAC unit had been installed with improper overcurrent protection. The breaker supplying power was substantially larger than the size specified on the unit’s data plate. At the retail building, structural issues were also identified with a masonry wall. In one of the office buildings, a gas pipe had been painted over white to match the surrounding piping.

“It was a privilege to work with the Sherwin-Williams team, it made for an outstanding class. We’re grateful for the opportunity to provide education and look forward to supporting their continued success”, said Rob Claus, Director of Education at CCPIA®.
